Aerial view of crowds and colourful inflatables entering the water at Shelly Beach in Manly

Manly Inflatable Boat Race at Shelly Beach

community event,  competition,  event,  fundraisers

Manly Inflatable Boat Race at Shelly Beach Event Photography The Manly Inflatable Boat Race at Shelly Beach is exactly the kind of community event that makes Sydney’s Northern Beaches such a great place to live. For one morning, the usually calm waters around Shelly Beach become a sea of giant unicorns, flamingos, ducks, palm trees and just about every inflatable creature imaginable. Participants arrive in costumes, spectators pack the shoreline and the whole area takes on a festival atmosphere. It is colourful, slightly chaotic and impossible to watch without smiling. For us at Koshka Media, it was also a brilliant community event to photograph. Photographing the Manly Inflatable Boat Race The concept of the race is wonderfully simple. Grab an inflatable, get into the water and somehow make your way around the roughly one-kilometre course. Speed is not really the point. Some people paddle seriously. Others arrive on enormous unicorns and flamingos that seem to have very different ideas about which direction they should travel. Teams dress up, friends race alongside each other and plenty of participants spend almost as much time in the water as they do on their inflatables. From a photography perspective, that unpredictability is what makes an event like this so much fun. Everywhere we looked something was happening. There were people paddling furiously, inflatables colliding, swimmers trying to catch their runaway floats and spectators cheering from the foreshore. The Surf Rescue crews out on the water were also an important part of the scene, keeping an eye on the huge number of participants spread across the bay. Community Event Photography From Land and Air We photographed the Manly Inflatable Boat Race from both the shoreline and the air. At water level, the focus was on people and moments. Costumes, laughter, splashing, paddling and the wonderfully competitive expressions of people trying to propel an inflatable flamingo across open water. These closer photographs capture the personality of the event and the people who make it happen. The wider perspective tells another part of the story. From above Shelly Beach, the scale of the event becomes much clearer. Hundreds of colourful inflatables spread across the water while spectators gather along the shoreline and around the foreshore. Combining ground photography with aerial coverage gives community events a much more complete visual story. You see both the individual moments and the environment in which they happen. More Than Just a Race Behind all the costumes and inflatable chaos is a community event with a meaningful purpose. The Manly Inflatable Boat Race has a history of bringing people together while raising money for charitable causes, including Tour de Cure and cancer research. That combination of fun, fundraising and community participation is a big part of what makes local events like this worth documenting. The photographs are not only about what happened on the day. They become a visual record of the people, volunteers, spectators and organisations that helped make the event happen. And in this case, they also happen to include an extraordinary number of inflatable unicorns. Edit gallery Capturing Community Events Across Sydney Community event photography is about much more than photographing a crowd. The strongest coverage captures the atmosphere of the day. The big scenes establish where the event is happening, while closer photographs reveal the personalities, interactions and spontaneous moments that give an event its character. At the Manly Inflatable Boat Race, that meant photographing everything from packed sections of Shelly Beach and colourful inflatables covering the water to paddlers, Surf Rescue crews, spectators and the small moments happening amongst all the chaos. It was energetic, unpredictable and genuinely good fun to document. For a community event, that is exactly the kind of story we want the photographs to tell. Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party

christmas party,  community event,  event,  fundraisers,  non for profit,  photo+video,  public places,  video

Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party There are some events where photography and video are about more than documenting what happened. They are about preserving the people, relationships and sense of community that give an organisation its purpose. The Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party in Kings Cross is one of those events. We had the pleasure of photographing the celebration and creating a highlight video capturing the colour, energy, fun and joy of the day. This year was particularly special, with Wayside Chapel celebrating 60 years of bringing people together. A Christmas tradition in Kings Cross Wayside Chapel has been part of the Kings Cross community since 1964, when Reverend Ted Noffs opened its doors on Hughes Street. From its early days, Wayside became a meeting place for people from very different parts of Sydney life. Over the decades, its work has continued to evolve around the needs of people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage and social isolation. The Christmas celebration grew from similarly humble beginnings. What started as a small barbecue in a back lane developed into the Christmas Day Street Party, bringing the celebration out onto the streets surrounding Wayside Chapel. On Christmas Day, Hughes Street transforms into one big celebration. Long tables fill the street as guests, volunteers, staff, supporters and locals come together for Christmas lunch. There is music, dancing, colourful outfits, festive decorations and plenty of laughter. This celebration was even more meaningful as Wayside Chapel marked its 60th anniversary. A special celebratory cake helped mark six decades of community, connection and bringing people together in Kings Cross. A community with no “us and them” Wayside Chapel’s mission is to create a community with no “us and them”, and Christmas Day brings that idea to life. People experiencing homelessness sit alongside volunteers, staff, local residents, supporters and visitors. Food is passed around the tables. Old friends catch up. New conversations begin. Volunteers move through the crowd carrying plates of Christmas lunch while music and laughter fill the street. For people who may otherwise spend Christmas alone, the day offers something beyond a meal. It creates an opportunity to belong, connect and celebrate Christmas as part of a community. That sense of togetherness was something we wanted both the photography and highlight video to capture. Rather than simply recording the event, we focused on the moments that showed what the day actually felt like: the smiles, spontaneous conversations, festive costumes, dancing, volunteers helping out and people enjoying Christmas together. Photographing and filming the Wayside Chapel Christmas celebration Our approach to photography and video for non-profit organisations is documentary and people-focused. At an event like the Wayside Chapel Christmas Day Street Party, some of the most meaningful moments aren’t necessarily the biggest ones. They’re found in the interactions between people. A volunteer carrying several plates through the crowd. Guests laughing together over lunch. Someone arriving in an unforgettable Christmas outfit. A quiet conversation at one of the tables. Friends dancing and celebrating in the sunshine. We photographed these moments throughout the day while also documenting the scale, decorations, food, volunteers and atmosphere of the event. Alongside the photography, we created a highlight video that brought these moments together in motion. Video adds another dimension to the story. The movement, music, laughter and energy of a celebration like this can be experienced in a way that complements the still photographs. Together, the photography and video create a broader visual record of the day and of the people who made it happen. Edit gallery Photography and video for non-profit organisations in Sydney Photography and video for charities and non-profit organisations require a different approach from conventional corporate event coverage. The content needs to communicate the purpose and scale of an event while still feeling natural and human. For organisations working with vulnerable communities, dignity is particularly important. People shouldn’t become props for an organisation’s message. We prefer to document genuine interactions and give people space to be themselves rather than manufacture moments for the camera. The resulting photography and video can then become part of an organisation’s wider visual library, supporting websites, fundraising campaigns, annual reports, social media, media releases and future events. For more than sixty years, Wayside Chapel has been part of the social fabric of Kings Cross. The Christmas Day Street Party is just one day in that long history, but it captures something central to the organisation: people coming together who might otherwise never share the same table. For us, that is what photography and video for community organisations should help preserve. Not simply what an organisation does, but what it feels like to be there. Koshka Media provides photography and video for non-profit organisations, charities and community organisations across Sydney and NSW. We document events, programs, people and stories with a natural, documentary approach, creating visual content organisations can use across communications, fundraising, campaigns, social media and annual reports. Bay to Beach Sydney Harbour Race – Fundraising Event Photography Sydney

community event,  competition,  event,  fundraisers,  non for profit,  public places,  sporting event

Bay to Beach Sydney Harbour Race Fundraising Event Photography Sydney Sydney Harbour came alive before sunrise as athletes, volunteers, supporters, and fundraising teams gathered for the annual Bay to Beach paddle race – one of Sydney’s most iconic harbour sporting events. This year, Koshka Media was there to provide professional fundraising event photography and sporting event coverage across the entire day. From the quiet moments before sunrise to the energy of the race start and the emotion at the finish line, the event showcased everything that makes Sydney Harbour such an incredible location for charity and community events. Early Morning Atmosphere on Sydney Harbour Long before the race began, the harbour foreshore was already full of activity. Competitors prepared kayaks, paddle skis, and boards while volunteers coordinated registrations and supporters gathered along the waterfront. The atmosphere before the start carried a mix of excitement, focus, and nervous anticipation. Some athletes quietly prepared for the challenge ahead, while others laughed with teammates and supporters as the city slowly woke around them. Sydney Harbour provided a spectacular backdrop for the morning. Calm water, soft sunrise light, ferries moving through the harbour, and views across the Sydney skyline created an unforgettable setting before the race had even begun. For fundraising event photography, these early moments are just as important as the competition itself. The preparation, teamwork, community spirit, and behind-the-scenes atmosphere all help tell the full story of the event. The Energy of the Race Start As the starting horn sounded, the quiet harbour instantly transformed into action. Hundreds of paddlers launched into Sydney Harbour together, creating one of the most exciting and visually spectacular moments of the day. Water sprayed through the air as competitors powered away from the start line surrounded by spectators and some of Sydney’s most recognisable landmarks. Throughout the race, Koshka Media focused on capturing both the intensity of the competition and the atmosphere surrounding the event. From close-up action photography to wide harbour scenes, every image was photographed to showcase the scale, emotion, and energy of the race. Sporting events on Sydney Harbour offer unique photographic opportunities, with the city skyline, open water, and constantly changing light creating dramatic conditions throughout the course. More Than a Sporting Event While competitors raced across the harbour, the atmosphere back on shore remained just as important. Supporters, families, volunteers, and fundraising teams gathered throughout the morning to cheer on participants and support the cause behind the event. The Bay to Beach race proudly supports the Fragile X Association of Australia, helping raise awareness and funds for individuals and families affected by Fragile X syndrome. Events like this play an important role in building community connection and supporting organisations that provide education, advocacy, and ongoing support for families across Australia. The strong community spirit throughout the day showed exactly why charity and fundraising events continue to be such an important part of Sydney’s sporting culture. Finish Line Moments By the finish line, the emotions of the day were written across every face. Athletes arrived exhausted, relieved, proud, and smiling as supporters welcomed them from the shoreline. Some competitors celebrated personal achievements, while others completed the race in support of loved ones or to help raise funds for the cause behind the event. These finish-line moments often become the most meaningful photographs from the entire day. They capture not only the physical challenge of the race, but also the emotion and purpose behind the event itself. Why Professional Event Photography Matters Professional fundraising event photography continues to create value long after the event is over. Strong visual coverage helps charities, sponsors, and event organisers promote future events, attract community support, increase sponsorship opportunities, and build stronger engagement online and across social media platforms.
